The lives of women and men in the Asia-Pacific region have recently been adversely affected by many types of natural disasters. The workshop comprising panelists from several countries in the region such as Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Australia will discuss a wide range of gender issues that arise during the various stages of the disaster, innovative coping strategies, best practices adopted by governments, NGOs and local communities, as well as lessons learned on how to integrate gender perspectives in the prevention and management of future disasters.

The purpose of this event is to bring together a group of young feminists below the age of 35, to share their concerns and speak about the challenges they face as young women living and negotiating their own space within the Asia Pacific region. With only two years to go until Cairo +20, when governments will be called upon to review their progress on the implementation of the 1994 ICPD Program of Action, it is crucial that young women come together, share their concerns and strategically identify ways in which governments can be held accountable to their international obligations.

Hi y'all,

Well the weather is holding, and the jet lag is kicking in...  In the UN the management of getting passes for CSW is much improved on previous years.  Big thank you to the check in team and the CSW coordinator who have now got the system streamlined to pre-print passes of those who have previously attended CSW.  However, for many of the government delegation members (and those renewing annual passes) most of Monday was spent negotiating security, filling out forms and standing in line.  Note to self...  don't be persuaded not to come early next year.

Well, here we are back in a particularly mild weathered New York City - anticipating the first event for many to the Commission on the Status of Women 56th Sessions.  Once again as women from around the globe gathered to celebrate the gains, advocate for positive change and highlight the gaps in global policy for women.  The NGO CSW Forum is an event with many women juggling time constraints, getting passes, buying local sim cards, trying to find their way around on the subway/bus system,   just arriving late the night before so sleep deprived, or coming straight from the airport.

source: UN Women

On 2 February 2012, the Pakistan Senate unanimously approved the “National Commission on the Status of Women Bill 2012″ to protect women’s rights against every kind of discrimination. The new bill replaces the National Commission on the Status of Women Ordinance from 2000 and strengthens the Commission by giving it financial and administrative autonomy through an independent Secretariat.

The Commission will investigate and gather information on issues regarding women’s rights, as well as have increased responsibilities to oversee the international commitments made by the government on all women’s issues. The newly adopted bill also changes the status of the Commission’s Chairperson who will now have the seniority of a State Minister, making recommendations directly to the national cabinet. The Commission will also have enhanced membership with two members from each Province and one member each from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit Baltistan, Islamabad and two members from minorities.
